First Opium War
China made Opium illegal which angered Britian because they made alot of money off of the Opium trade. Britian then sent warships to China and forced them to make Opium legal. -

China and Japan fought for control of Korea. Eventually the more modern Japanese army won -
Boxer Rebellion
A Chinese organization called the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists led an uprising against the spread of Western influence. The rebels were called Boxers by Westerners because they looked like Boxers. These Boxers thought they could not be hurt by bullets. From June to August the Boxers surrounded Beijing, China’s capital, until an international force ended the uprising. -
Open Door Policy
The USA came up with a policy where traders from any country could come into China and trade, which China was forced to comply with. -
Communist Party Formed
Formed by Mao Zedong from ideas of the Soviet Union. Mao belived in communism, in which everyone does a job and gets payed the same by the government. -
The Long March
When the Communist party was surrounded by the Nationalist party so they marched 8000 miles to get away and grow stronger. Mao Zedong led the march which later secured his position as the leader of the communist party. -
Nationalists flee and Mao controls communist China
During World War 2 the Nationalists and Communists joined together to fight Japan. After the war the Communists had become so strong that they took china over and the Nationalists fleed to Taiwan. -
Beginning of the great leap forward
A push by Mao Zedong to change China from a farming society to a modern, industrial society in just five years. It failed causing famine and widespread cannibalism throught China. -
End of the alliance between the Soviet Union and China
Mao Zedong went to the Soviet Union to see their Communist country and he disagreed on how Comnunism is supposed to be run and was so angered he broke off ties with them. -
The Cultural Revolution
Mao Zedong created the cultural revolution to make a classless society. He urged students to not go to school and travel the country and make everyone equal. These students were called Red Guards. The Red Guards brutatially humiliated anyone that dissagred with the government. -
President Nixon visits China
President Nixon went to china to see Mao Zedong and improve relations with china. This visit also showed that China was with the US in the cold war and against the Soviet Union -
Mao dies as does the cultural revolution
Mao Zedong dies and the killing and humiliating that was being done by the red guards stops. The cultural revolution ends but it leaves china many years behind in technology, industry, education, and politics. -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
Students protest against communism and push for democracy. They gathered in Tiananmen Square to protest but the government took military action and so it was called the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Many students died.
