    Antony Tudor
    Trained with Marie Rambert in the English Ballet community.
    Develeped "psychological ballet"
    Contributed classical techniques, convayed states of emotional conflict and aspects of character and motivation.
    Greatest work: Romeo and Juliet.
  • Alwin Nikolais

    Alwin Nikolais
    Began his study of dance with Truda Kaschmann
    Significant for his abstract dancers that combiened motion, various technical effects and a complete freedom from technique that estrablisched certain patterns.

    Dance school and company called the Natonal Centre of Contemporary Dance at Angers
    Major works- Masks, Props and Mobiles
    Choreographed with Hanya Holm at his company
  • Paul Taylor

    Paul Taylor
    Worked with dancers Martha Graham and George Balancine
    Created the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1957
    Most famous works were "Esplanade" and "Arden Court."
    Danced at Juilliard School of the Arts in NYC.
    First dance credit and work was a presentation of "Jack and the Beanstalk."
    Trained under modner dance and choreographed ballets and mondern dances.
  • Robert Joffery

    Robert Joffery
    Studied tap and then cahnged to ballet with Mary Ann Wells where he met Gerald Arpino who later would beome his companies co-director.
    1956 he founded The Joffery Ballet which was an ensamble of American dancers who he choreographed, taught, commisioned original ballets, and recorstructed the classic ballets.
    Greatest works was Persephone which he worked on at the American Ballet Center.
  • Alvin Ailey

    Alvin Ailey
    His frined Carmen de Lavallade introduced Ailey to Lester Horton whom he got his classical training from.
    Founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 1958
    Studied with Martha Graham
    Spreaded the style of modern dance to the world.
    Major work of his was Revelations
    During his career he choreographed close to 80 ballets.
    In 1988 Ailey was honord by the Kennedy Center for his contributions to the arts.
  • Arthur Mitchel

    Arthur Mitchel
    Born in New York City March 27, 1934
    Began dance trainig at New York City's High School of Performing Arts
    There he was awarded the Annual Dance Award.
    Continued training at the School of American Ballet after high school.
    In 1955 he was the first African American to be a permanent meber at the New York City Ballet.
    Selected by George Balanchine and lincoln Kirstein to join the NYCB
    1969 He decided to create his own dance company called Dance Theatre of Harlem.
  • Peter Martins

    Peter Martins
    Born October 27, 1945 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
    Started trainin g at the School of the Royal Danish Ballet.
    Tony nomination for "Song and Dance."
    Coreographed more than 50 works in his dance career.

  • Bill T. Jones

    Bill T. Jones
    Studied at State University of New York at Binghamton.
    Arnie Zane became his partner in business.
    Both created the American Dance Asylum in 1973.
    Tested the boundatires of modern dance.
    Some of Jones' best works were made during Zane's wake.
    Jones was diagnosed as HIV-positive so he used that for dance ideas.

    Gelsey Kirkland
    Born December 29, 1952
    1974- Joined the American Ballet Theatre
    1984- Left American Ballet Theatre
    Inspired many choreographers including George Balanchine, Antony Tudor and Jerome Robbins.
    Spent her career as a performing artist performing at the NYCB
    Known for performing Romantic Ballets
  • Mark Morris

    Started performing and takin gcalsses professionally at age 11.
    Began choreographing professoinally and joined the Koleda Folk Ensamble two years later.
    Taught by Eliot Feld, Lar Lubovitch, Laura Dean and Hannah Kahn.
    Noted for his innovative and controversial works.
    1980 he created his own dance company of 10 dancers whom he traveled with to perform his works.
    "bad boy of modern dance"
    1989- created in Belgium including L'Allegrok, il penseroso ed il moderato.
  • Bebe Miller

    Began dance at the age of 4 at the Henry Street Settlement on the Lower Est Side of NYC.
    Learned from Murray Lewis and his partner Alwin Nikolais.
    Went to OSU and got an AM in dance in 1975.
    Formed the Bebe Miller Company in 1985 which was known for it's "mix of virtuosic dancing and fundamental humanity."

    Dance Theatre of Harlem
    Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969. (No specific date, Decemeber 18 is just a random date in the year.)
    Started by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook.
    Focused mostly on classical ballet but also teach other styles.
    Keith Saunders began dancing in 1971 and became a principle dancer and was in the company for over 17 years.
    Return and Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven were perennial favorites.
