A soilder names Corporal Brown gave Ticey, who was 10 years of age at the time, the name Jane Brown ofter his daughter in Ohio. Corporal Brown gave Ticey the name Jane because he felt that Ticey was a slave name and she shawll no longer be referred to as an enslave African-American, -
Proclamation Papers
The Master of Jane and the other slave on the plantion are called onto the gallery by their master. The master states the they are now free annd can leave or stay if the chose to. They are no longer considered slaves. -
Massacare
Patrollers killed everyone who had travel off the platation with Jane except for Jane and a young child Ned,5 years old. The patrollers beat them with sticks until they were no longer contious. Ned was Big Luaras son, and since Big Luara had been killed Jane felt she was now responsible for Ned. -
Mr. Job
During the walk North Jane and Ned met a Man nemed Job. Job took them to his home, feed them, and gave them a place to sleep for the night. The next morning Job took Ned and Jane to a plantation owned by a man named Bone. -
The Hunter
Jane in Ned on their journey north encountered a man who was heading back south in search for his father, His father had been auctioned off to a plantation in mississippi. This story illistrates the fact that most black families had been seperated but they still had hope to one day be reunited. -

bones plantation
At Bones plantation Jane, now 11 or 12 year old, was givin work and shelter. She was paid 10 dollars a week like the other women on the plantation. She would give Bone .50 cents in order for Ned to receve an education. This was Jane's new home place over a mass period of time. -
Colonel Dye Takes Plantation
Mr.Boone's plantaiton was sold to Colonel Dye. Colonel Dye was A Seches soldier who fought in the war. Under his new rule Jane lost her pay, and Jane says "it was like slavery all over again". -
Joe Died
Joe went after the loose black horse that Jane thought would kill him. He jumped on a horse bairback, and then joe ropes the black horse. Joe didn't have a saddle, so the horse drug him off into the swamps. Joe didn't let go of the rope, he died. -
Ned Leaves Bone's Plantation
Nrd joins a commitee that reported how colored people were treated after the war. Ned did a bad report over the plantation run by Colonel Dye the showd the committeee they were treated no better then they were in slavery. Ned was 17 or 18. The cajuns did not like what Ned was doing ant sent the Ku Klux Klab out to get him. The KKK beat Jane in search for Ned. When Ned heard of the insident he fleed to protect Jane. Jane was around 24 or 45 years old. -
Jane Meets Joe Pittman
Joe pittman is a slave who had a wife, but she died. Joe has two kids, both girls. He doesn't mind that Jane is barren,saying that haven't we all been hurt by slavery. Joe asks Jane to marry him, and the first two times shse says no. Jane finally told him that she was barren, and he said he would be good if Jane helpede him raise his two girls. They didn't end up getting married. Jane and Joe just started living together. -
Ned Moves to Louisiana
Ned moves to be by Jane around the age of 45. He built a school, and was going to teach there, but he was murdered before he teached his students things that the cajuns did not want him to teach, such as standing up for their race. Ned died around the age of 46. Jane is around the age of 45-47 years old when he died. -
Jane Leaves Plantation
Joe tells Colonel Dye that he wants to move out of the plantation. Colonel Dye says that he can leave once he pays him back 150 dollars for freeing him from the KKK. Joe gives Colonel Dye the 150 dollars and Colonel Dye says that he has to pay 30 dollars in intest. Joe pays the 30 dollars and him and Jane move on the Luzana-Texas border onto Mr. Cylde's plantation. -
Ned Died
Ned was murdered on the way to get lumber for the school. He was laid on top of the wood, and was carried home where everyone started crying. Albert Clouveau shot him in the leg trying to make him crawl, and then he killed him. The reason Ned was shot in the leg was because the people who had hired Albert wanted Him to crawl before he was killed. -
Albert Cluveau Dies
Albert Clouvoue died about 12 years after he killed Ned. Jane is now 55-60 years old. Ablbert Cluveau was hired by people to "Get rid of" ther problems. Ablbert can also be loosely compared to a Hit-Man. Jane was around 60 years of age when Albert died. Albert believed that Jane had put a hoo-doo on him.He had come to believe that she had sent the Charriot of Hell after him. -
Jane Moves To Samson
Jane knows Aunt Hattie Jordan the cook at Samson's place. She convinced Jaane to stay close to where she used to live on the river to be close to Ned's grave. She was also the one who aranged to have Jane borrow the wagon to move tio the Samson's place. Jane lived at the samson place from that time to the end of her life -
Black Harriet
Katie and Black Harriet have a race to see who can pick the most cotton. Black Harriett ran into grass,and that slowed her down. Black Harriett started to leave a lot of grass behind, so she could stay in the lead. Tom Joe was there, and he saw what was happening, and decided to stop it. He started to beat Black Harriett, and they finally stopped him. Mr. Samson fired Katie, and kept Tom Joe. -
Jane Joins the Church
Jane finally found her religion, and got her travel. She was stopped and questioned by the devil in the form of Albert Cluveau, and Ned. -
Finding religion
Miss Jane Pittman found religion one Thusday morning on the way to the fields. the lord came to her i a long white robe and told her if she want the bicks taken off. during her journey across the river she incountered obstacles. The devil costumed himself into people that Jane knew and ued them to try and take her off the path.The devil costumed himself aa Ned, Joe, and Albert. Jane kept pushing to cross the river and then finally she made it. -
Timmy leaves
Timmy was beaten by Tom Joe, and was asked to leave the samson's place. This decision was made by Rboret Samson in favor of Timmy's saftey. -
the high water of '27
high water '27 "i remember the high water of '12 well enough, but the high water of '27 i won't ever forget," (page 156). The high water of 1927 covered thousand of acres in Louisana and killed hundreds of people. -
Mrs. Lilly the school teacher
Mrs. Lilly was the first school teacherfor awhile, and she wanted everyone to have a toothbrush, and toothpaste. -
Huey P. Long
Came after the high water of 1927. "Nothing better could 'a' happened to the poor black man or poor whit man no matter what they say," (page 158). Jane is saying that Huey Long worked to help the poor.Huey Long gave the poor books. Back then you were not supposede to help the poor. you were suppose to let them work, let them fight, and let them die, but you were never suppose to help them. Thats what Huey did he help the poor which is something you were not suppose to do. -
Joe Hardy is the school teacher
Joe Hardy was the school teacher who made the children make him a garden, and had the girls stay after to help him grade the papers. He wasn't a nice human being. -
Goodbye Huey P. Long
It is said the Huey Long was killed by Dr. Wesis because Long said that Dr. Wesis wife's grandfather had nigger blood in his veins. Jane does not believe that is how Huey Long died. She believes that the rich people had one of their guards kill him. "They only said that [ Dr. Wesis killed long] because they thought the poor would rise. -
Mary Agnes LeFabre
She was the school teacher, and was of creole descent and a mulatto. She was of medium heigth and a little thin. She talked to Tee Bob and wouldn't getin the car with him. -
Tee Bob Kills Himself
He realizes that he can't get away from white people ruling over black people, so he commits suicide. -
Tee Bob comes out of the closet
Tee Bob told Jimmy Caya about his feelings for Mary Anges. He told him abput how much he felt for her and about how he had never felt a love that strong beforre. Jimmy Caya did not respond wwith the tone hat would have been expected. Jimmy Caya told Tee bob to getover himself. He told him to have nothing to do with her. At these words Tee Bob hit Jimmy across the face. -
Jimmy "The One"
When babies are born Jane and the others on the plantation aske if that baby is the one. "The One" was a person they believed was going to grow up and help them. When Jimmy was born they all knew he was the one. Everyone on the plantion worked to keep him out of trouble. -
Jane moves down the quarters
Jane wanted to be with the older people who were like her family to her. -
Jimmy is born
The old people start to think that Jimmy was the One, and so they started to watch him. -
Jane finds out
Jane finds out that Jimmy was killed when she was aroung the age of 100. She set out to find Jimmy in Bayonne. Robert Samson told her to stay on the plantaion instead of going out to find Jimmy, but she passes Robert and goes anyway.
