Miss Trunchbull is the headmistress of the school. She is described as a tyrannical monster who frightens the students. -
Matilda's first day of school
Miss Honey asks the class if they have learnt the two-times table and few of them raise their hand. Matilda begins reciting all the multiplication tables with great facility and tells Miss Honey that she taught herself how to multiply. -
Child genius / prodigy
Matilda shows Miss Honey that she is capable of multiplying difficult numbers without using a calculator. Miss Honey is spellbound by Matilda's intelligence and feels she has met a truly mathematical brain. On this occasion, Miss Honey considers Matilda a "child-genius" or "prodigy". -
Limerick
Miss Honey challenges Matilda to read a limerick and she does so perfectly. In addition to this, Matilda tells that she has made a limerick about Miss Honey and reads it out loud. Miss Honey smiles widely and blushes. Here Matilda admits that she taught herself how to read. -
Books at the public library
Miss Honey is so captivated by Matilda's ability that she asks her what books she has read. Matilda mentions that she has read all children's books available in the public library and even some books for adults. -
The bell rings
When Matilda is giving her opinion on the books she has read, the bell rings and the class is over. By this first day of school, Miss Honey is completely mesmerized by Matilda's intelligence and humility.
