The First Fleet Part 1
The First Fleet left the coast of Santa Cruz, Tenerife the 13th of May 1787 with 11 ships. They are called the HMS Sirius, HMS Supply, Alexander, Charlotte, Friendship, Lady Penrhyn, Prince Of Wales, Scarborough, Golden Grove, Fishburn and Borrowdale. There were 767 males onboard, 222 females, 41 children and altogether there were 1030 people on the First Fleet. The Captain of the ship was Captain Arthur Phillip. They went to Rio de Janeiro and stayed there for a month for repairs. -
The First Fleet Part 2
The first fleet left rio de janeiro to the next stop; South Africa to stock up on plants before arriving at Australia. The First Fleet arrived at Port Jackson on the 26th January 1788. -

Settling Van Diemen's Land Part 1
Van Diemen’s Land now named originally Tasmania was named after Van Diemen. It was named after a Dutch explorer who was the first to land on the shores of Tasmania. Tasmania was first named as an island when Matthew Flinders and George Bass Circumnavigated the island in 1798 – 99 on a ship called “Norfolk”. It was colonised by the British in 1803 as a penal colony. In New South Wales the jails were too full so they sent the convicts to Van Diemen’s Land. -
Settling Van DIemen's Land Part 2
Male Convicts were sentenced to public work while the Female convicts were servants in houses and sent to a female factory. In Van Diemen’s Land there are only six female factories. Most convicts who had finished their sentences moved into Victoria for a free new colony. During the settlement the Victorian Gold Rush happened; so many people rushed over to Victoria. In 1856 the colony was officially changed to Tasmania. -
Gold Rush
In Victoria in 1851 gold struck the rivers and lakes. Gold first made a discovery in Australia on by an assistance surveyor James McBrien on the 15th February 1823. Many people from other countries came to Victoria to try their luck. In 1856 there were 3,053,744 troy ounces. The population of Australia had increased in 19 years from 0 to 123,000. The Victorian Gold rush lasted for approximately 20 years. -
Ned Kelly Part 1
Ned Kelly was born on June 1854 in Beveridge, Victoria to an Irish family. His mum and dad were named Ellen and John. Ned attended Avenel School until his father died when he was 10. After his father died they moved to a hut at Eleven Mile Creek. At the age of 15 he went behind bars for six months by convicting summary offences. After he was released from bars he was sentenced to jail for three years for stealing a mare. -
Ned Kelly Part 3
At the Glenrowan Shooting on the 27th of June 1880. After a while of shooting Ned Kelly’s gang and himself had caught and sentenced to death. He was hanged at the old Melbourne Gaol on the 11th November 1880. -
Ned Kelly Part 2
For two years he had worked for timber-getting but after in 1876 he joined the job that his step-father had; stealing horses. His little brother James was sent to prison for five years for stealing cattle and his other brother Dan was prisoned for three months for damaging property. When Ned was 24 he became a bushranger stealing money from the rich to the poor. -
Federation Part 2
It was several time from federation until in 1893 there was a conference of pro federation groups. It was a conference to decide that all Australians should vote. Another election occurred which was called a “referendum” to decide that colonies could vote on constitution. NSW and Victoria made a decision to have a state capital and they chose Sydney and Melbourne. In may 1900 the Commonwealth of Australia institution act 1900 was signed by Queen Victoria. -
Federaton Part 3
. So from 1901 the colonies were to be known as the Commonwealth of Australia. On august 1900 there was a referendum and the people of Western Australia voted to join the Commonwealth. On the 9th of May 1901 the first Commonwealth parliament was open. -
Federation Part 1
Federation began in the 20th century by dividing South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia into six states by the British Parliament to make the commonwealth of Australia. In 1890 the premier of NSW, Henry Parkes convinced the other premiers to discuss Australasian Federation Convention. The first convention was held in 1890 in Melbourne and the next was at Sydney in 1891.
