Thomas Paine wrote this book to try to inspire the colonists to fight against England. It was quite successful, becuase it riled up the colonists to start the revolution. -
Signing of the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was intended to break us free from England. The preamble was the intro to the DOA. The impact was Americans fought harder to win for the creation of a nation. The 1st section was about rights. the 2nd section was about British grievances. The third section is the formal letter of independence. -
Retreat from New York
Because of this retreat, Americans were forced to fight in the Middle Colonies. In the end, we lost the battle of Long Island. Nathan Hale was an American spy famous for saying "I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country." The morale went way down. -
Crossing the Delaware River
They crossed the Delaware River to get to Trenton, New Jersey. Hessian hired soldiers [mercs] were guarding the place. Americans won. -

The French wanted to be sure the Americans had the edge before supporting us. France was the first ally of America. Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben trained the American army and got them to be better soldiers. He was from the German province Hesse. -
Battle of Saratoga
Burgoyne's goal was to effectively keep Americans in the Middle Colonies. The Brits failed because they had no reinforcements, and they underestimated the militia. It was an American victory. Burgoyne's plan was to come from Albany with three forces and destroy NY. -

Valley Forge Winter
Valley Forge is in Pennsylvania. The British were camped in warm Philidephia, while Americans froze and got sick and died. Valley Forge conditions were harsh. We made it through, and came out to a changed war.
