In 1570, the ship that Cervantes was stationed on was captured by a squadron of Ottoman Pirates. He was then kept prisoner for the next five years. -

Ransom
In July of 1579, Miguel's mother gave 250 ducats to a couple of trinitarian monks, who were sent to pay the ransom. They arrived on May 29th, and took till September 19th for them to negotiate a deal for Cervantes' freedom. -
