Cervantes was born in Alcalá de Henares in Madrid, Spain as Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra to Rodrigo de Cervantes and Leonor de Cortinas as their second son and fourth child of seven. -

Poetic Debut
Cervantes made his debut with a sonnet titled "Serenisima reina en quien se halla" for the birth of Princess Catalina Micaela, the second daughter of Philip II and Elizabeth of Valois. -

Studies
Cervantes studies with Juan López de Hoyos. López de Hoyos makes Cervantes write four poems to be included in the Relación oficial de las exequias about the death of Elizabeth of Valois. -

Move
Miguel moved to Rome as a valet because back home there was an order to arrest a student named Miguel de Cervantes for dueling and wounding the master builder Antonio de Sigura.
Until another Miguel de Cervantes is found Cervantes will be blamed for this event. -

Miguel de Cervantes joined the army and was part of it for ten years although five of them he was captured and held by Algerian pirates. -

Cervantes joins the army in 1570 and gets malaria but continues to fight from the ship in 1571. He gets shot three times. Twice in the chest and once in the arm causing his left hand to become useless. -
