Continental Congress passes an ordinace for the land east of the Mississippi river. It was passed to organize the settlement and how the land was to be governed. -

The Great Midwest Earthquake
Frontiers of the town New Madrid were awakened by a massive earthquake.It's power and shaking struck Missouri, South Carolina, West Virginia and even to Ohio. After the earthquake, they started to rebuild, but then in January and February, 2 more earthquakes struck. Both had a magnitude of 7.5 or greater and the damage was devastating. -

Bleeding Kansas
A lot of violent political confrontations that involved the Kansas-Nebraska Act that the decision about slavery would be by popular sovreinty. The problem was whether or not Kansas would allow or not allow slavery. There was a dispute with the other states around Kansas whether it should be or not be a slave state. These disagreements soon became a violent outbreak, which contributed to the Civil War. -

The Chicago Race Riot
Tension was brewing after WW1 and it was finally let loose in July 29, 1919, when a 17 year-old African-American was stoned by whites and drowned after accidentally crossing the unofficial white-black barrier of the lake. Police did nothing about it and it made many mad. Riots let loose all over and that riot had shown the unfairness of racial segregation which led to nonsegregation. -
The 1933 Bank Crisis
The deepest banking crisis of the Great Depression was started by the failure of 2 banks in Detroit. For weeks, every bank in Michigan were closed down by law. The holiday was made by Herbert Hoover to prevent the threat of Henry Ford, who was the main supporter of these banks and was running out of cash
from a crisis and if the banks continued to lose stablility, would redraw his support. The holiday didn't last for 8 days and did not stop in Michigan, many states also had the problem and loss. -
Sears (Willis) Tower Completed
On this day the Sears tower was opened and was the tallest tower in the world for about 25 years until the World Trade Center surpassed it. It is a major place a buisness and tourism and was renamed on July 16, 2009 to Willis Tower -
Iowa Flood of 2008
Around this day Iowa was struck with a major flood that, even today, are still trying to repair the damage that it cost. It ended on July 1st and was cause by many of the rivers in easter Iowa were flooding tremendously, flooding the city that "would never flood". The greatest damage caused was to Iowa City and the Cedar Rapids.
