  • The Indian Removal Act

    The Indian Removal Act
    The Indian Removal Act was proposed by former President Jackson. This act stated that all eastern Native Americans would be forcibly relocated to a new territory in the west.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    The Trail of Tears was a journey eastern Indians were forced to make as a direct result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. About 13% died on this westward migration from their original homes to the new territories.
  • The Civil War

    The Civil War
    During the span of the Civil War the Indian tribes became allies of the Confederate side. They were promised many things by Pike (No debt, sovereignty, protection, etc.), in exchange the tribes would provide troops that would fight for the CSA.
  • The Reconstruction Treaties

    The Reconstruction Treaties
    The tribes were to abolish slavery and give their freed slaves tribal citizenship and property rights. They were also forced to allow the construction of 2 railroads(one north-south and one east-west).
  • The Dawes Act

    The Dawes Act
    Also Known as the General Allotment Act, this act aimed to assimilate Natives into the American Culture. It also had an impact on tribal land ownership.
  • The Oklahoma Land Rush

    The Oklahoma Land Rush
    The Oklahoma Land Rush was when Indian land was made available for purchase. The reason the land was so desirable was because it was extremely cheap and you could claim up to 160 acres of land and after owning it for 5 years it would be put under their name.
  • The Indian Reorganization Act

    The Indian Reorganization Act
    Also known as the Wheeler Howard Act. This act aimed to fix some of the harmful policies of the past. It encouraged tribal self-government and allowed for greater control over their lands.
