The president wanted the Indians to sign a removal treaty. It required the Indians to give up their land and move to the southeastern U.S. -
Trail of tears
The Natives were forced to move to the southeastern lands. Many died due to harsh conditions the tribes were exposed to. -
Civil war
This war was between the Union and confederacy. Mainly over the issue of slavery. -
The Reconstruction Treaties
The tribes agreed to treaties that forgave all the crimes against the U.S. The ones committed before the treaties. -
The daws act
The law gave the permission to break up reservation lands. To sell mainly to white settlers. -
The Oklahoma Land Rush
People, mainly white settlers, would run to claim really really cheap land that used to be Indians. This was very beneficial for the ex-slaves. -
The Indian Reorganization act
after 1934 the Indian reservation land created or set apart by treaty, should be separated and distributed. It was mainly to increase Indian self government and take responsibility for their own affairs.
