The Trail of Tears was a painful time for the Native Americans because they had to move over 1,100 miles. -
The civil war
The Civil War started on April 12, 1861, and ended in
April 9, 1865, the reason they fought was that they thought that things should change. The economy, policies, culture, how the government worked and operated, and what they would do with the slaves in the whole of the United States. That was the things they were fighting for. -
The Reconstruction Treaties
In 1866 after the Civil War, all of the five tribes started a treaty with the United States stating what would happen with the rights of freed slaves and African slaves inside of the Five Tribes. -
The dawes act
The Dawes Act allowed the president to give out reserved land to the members of the five tribes. The purpose was to assimilate the Native Americans into U.S. society. And also took away the native's land which was sold to non-natives later on. -
The oklahoma land rush
The Oklahoma land rush was when the government sold the native's land cheaply to white settlers. -
The Indian Reorganization Act
The act gave the Native Americans better control of their land. This act allowed the Native Americans to have a tribal government. Which was good but still far from what the Native Americans deserved, and what was owed to them by the government.
