The Continentail Congress adopted the Declaration of Indepedence which declared the 13 Colonies free from Britain. -
Battle of Trenton
The Hessian army was defeated in a surprise attack by Washington's army across the Delaware River. The Americans were then inspired by the easy defeat of the British Hessian forces. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga ended in a victory for the Americans. It was the turning point of Revolutionary war. Foreign nations allied with the colonists against the Britsh. -
Paoli Massacre
This was very small, cruel battle fought as part of the Philadelphia Campaign in the American Revolution. British Commander General Grey launched a surprise attack on General Wayne’s Pennsylvania Division. There were rumors that the British had stabbed or burned Americans who surrendered, and this is why the battle was given the name of “the Paoli Massacre.” However, this was false. -
Washington's Encampment at Valley Forge
Valley Forge was where the American Continental Army made camp during the winter of 1777-1778. This is where the American forces became a true fighting unit. Valley Forge is often called the birthplace of the American Army.
