    Balfour Declaration
    This was a letter from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary (Arthur James Balfour) to a leader of the British Jewish community (Baron Rothschild) for transmission to the Zionist Fed. of Great Britan and Ireland. The British stated if they won WWI they would show their support for the establishment in Palestine of a homeland for the Jewish people.

    After WWI, the UN gave Britain control of Palestine. British decided to separate parts for Jewish and Arab settlements. European Jews immigrated to Palestine because of Nazi persecution.

    An example of anti-seminism, meaning a hatred of Jews. This was a genocide controlled by Nazi's, who killed six million Jews. Because of anti-seminism, Zionism was created. Zionism is a support group for Jews and are people who wanted to help the Jews back to their holy land in Palestine.

    The Six Day War took place in the middle east and was fought by israel and the neighboring states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. It began with Israel launching surprise airstrikes against Arab forces and resulted in Israel seizing the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, Galah heights from Syria, and the West Bank and Eastern Jerusalem from Jordan.

    This war was fought between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. The war began with Syria and Egypt launching a surprise attack on Israel to regain lost land during Six Day War. This attack happened on the holiest day of Judaism and continuted throughout the Muslim holy month, Ramadan. Due to the support and aid of the United States for Israel, Israel won.

    After the Yom Kippur War, Arab blocked oil trade with U.S. This was the direct result of U.S. being involved with support of Israel. This led to problems in the U.S. which effected oil prices and limitations. They had two choices, change their lifestyle or find alternative sources. An example of an alternative source would be the Alaskan Pipeline.
  • Jimmy Carter

    Jimmy Carter
    Under the presidency of Carter, he was involved in the Iran Hostage crisis which may have caused his 2nd term not happening. In this crisis he allowed a shah from Iran to come to U.S. for cancer treatment which upset the Iranians resulting in a hostage of 60 Americans for 444 days. He was also involved with the peace settlement of Israel and Egypt also known as the Camp David Accords.
  • Alaskan Pipeline

    Alaskan Pipeline
    This was built after the oil crisis, in response to the Arab Oil Embargo. During this crisis our supply of oil was limited which meant the U.S. needed outside sources. Therefore the pipeline helped to lower oil prices and gave the U.S. a new source of oil
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    Agreement made under the presidency of Carter which called for peace between Israel and Egypt. In this agreement, Israel and Egypt formally sign a peace agreement, ending 31 years of war between them. Results: Egypt recognizes israels right to exist as free sovereign nation. and Israel agreed to return Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. and they both agree to promise peaceful relations.
  • Iran Hostage Crisis

    Iran Hostage Crisis
    About 60 Americans were help hostage by Iranian students who took over the U.S. embassy in Tehran. These Iranian students were trying to send a message to the Americans and wanted to stop the Americans in foreign affairs. This event was an immediate cause of president Carter's decision to allow Iran's Shah to come to the U.S. for cancer treatment. The hostages held in the middle east were let go 444 days later when Reagan took office.

    The USSR intervened support of the Afgan communist government in its conflict with anit-communist muslim guerillas during the Afgan war. It was a watershed event of the cold war marking the only time the sovet union invaded a country outside the Eastern bloc-A strategic decision met by nearly world wide condemnation.

    was a suicide attack against the United States Navy guided-missle destroyer USS Cole on oct. 12, 2000. while it was harbored and eing refueled in the Yemeni port of Aden. 17 american sailors were killed and 39 were injured. this event was the deadliest attack since 1987.
