Herrad of Landsberg was born in 1130 in Alsase France and died July 25, 1195 in Hohenburg, Germany. Herrad was a 12th century Alsatian nun and abbess of Hohenburg Abbey in the Vosges Mountains. The image “The Garden of Delights”.The colors used in this portrait are beautiful darker earthy tones. Herrad created this piece so that women would find refreshment and repose for their souls and minds. To me this piece says that women are great no matter what the men of the time thought. -

Hildegard of Bingen was born in 1098 in Bermersheim vor der Hohe, Germany and died September 17, 1179 in Bingen, Germany. Hildegard was a Benedictive nun that had visions.The image by Hildegard known as “The Cosmic Tree” is a very colorful piece that depicts what Hildegard saw as the creation of evolution. In the middle circle there are trees and men completing different tasks. I believe Hildegard created this piece of art to depict what she saw in one of her visions. -

Judith Leyster was born on July 28, 1609 in Haarlem, Netherlands and died on February 10, 1660 in Heemstede, Netherlands. Leyster was a Dutch painter of portraits and still life’s. The painting I have chosen is of a red and white striped tulip with a vibrant green stem. -

Plautilla Nelli was born in 1524 in Florence, Italy and died in 1588 in Florence, Italy. she become a nun at the age of 14. She was a self taught artist. The portrait I chose is a self portrait of this amazing convent artist. -

Marianne Loir was born December 10, 1705 in Paris, France and died May 11,1783 also in Paris, France. She specialized in portraits. She studied under the director of the French Academy in Rome, Jean Francois de Troy. Portrait de Emilie Le Tonnelier de Breleuil, is a portrait of a woman sitting at a desk. The woman is wearing a very elegant blue with white lace at the cuffs. -

Mary Delaney was born on May 14, 1700 in Coulston, United Kingdom and died on April 15, 1788 in Windsor, United Kingdom. She was best known for her paper mosaics and botanic drawings. This is one of her botanic drawings of a beautiful sunflower. The vivid green leaves on the stem are drooping a little bit. -

Adelaide Labille-Guiard was born April 11, 1749 in Paris, France and died on April 24, 1803 also in Paris, France. She was a French miniaturist and portrait painter. She was also a big advocate for women to be given the same opportunities as men. Adelaide’s painting “Self Portrait with Pupils” shows her sitting in front of a canvas painting with two pupils eagerly watching over her shoulder. -

Elisabeth-Louise Vigee-Lebrun was born on April 16, 1755 in Paris, France and died on March 30, 1842 also in Paris, France. She was a portrait painter specializing in portraits of women. The painting “Self Portrait with her Daughter Julie” is a painting of Elisabeth sitting on a couch with her young daughter on her lap. Both mother and daughter look extremely happy. The child is wearing a white dress while Elisabeth is in a blue and gold dress. -

Rosa Bonheur was born March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, France and died May 25, 1899 in Thomery, France. She was a French artist best known for her paintings of animals. “Plowing in the Nivernais” is a painting of farmers using cattle to plow a field. There is a tree covered hill in the background. -

The “Photographic Study” portrait is of a young woman leaning against a window. She is in an off the shoulder flowy dress. -

Edith Domick was born February 26, 1876 in Hartford, CT and died October 28, 1955 also in Hartford, CT. She was an American painter whose work was exhibited at the 1913 Armory show in New York. Her painting “Outside the Lines” is of a man and woman in a restaurant drinking and seem to be watching something that is happening out of the picture. -

Her painting “The Spinner” is of a woman standing next to a big spinning wheel in what looks like a house or a workshop. -

Maria Magdalena Lubienska was born in 1833 and died in 1920. She was also known as Countess Lubienska. She was a Polish artist and founded her School of Drawing and Painting in 1867. This is a black and white self portrait. -

The Fairy of the Belle Epoque is a painting of a woman wearing a red hat, no shirt and a blue and white striped flowy skirt with flowers. -

Madonna Louise Ciccone also known as the Queen of Pop was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. She has four children. Madonna became a music sensation in the 1980’s when music was male dominated. After her mothers death when she was only 5, Madonna was determined to make her voice heard. Her success was based on her music and also the edgy fashion she wore in her videos and her concerts. -

Lady Gaga born as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born March 28, 1986 in Yonkers, New York. Lady Gaga is an international pop star. She began writing songs for Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, and The Pussycat Dolls. She was discovered by R&B singer Akon. She is also an actress co-starring in American Horror Story: Hotel. She has overcome a very angry alcoholic father and domestic violence in relationships and still made it in the music world and inspires women.
