    5 tribes resisted adapting to white assimilation. America was starting to grow and needed more land for white settlers. Andrew Jackson in 1830 Southeastern Tribes to relocate to land west of the Mississippi. The Indian removal act was passed by Andrew Jackson in 1830. Some people took it without getting mad or upset but some resisted. 100,000 Natives had to give up their ancestral homeland and move to unfamiliar territory.

    Natives traveled over 5,000 miles to Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) on the Trail of tears
    Many Native americans died on the trail due to Starvation, Sickness, Extreme hot & cold temps ,Exhaustion and the Cherokee Tribe suffered the most.

    The Dawes act divided up reservation land into individual plots for ownership. It made way for white settlement and it was a assimilation tactic.

    It was a step in the right direction for natives rights, but still not good enough. It Encouraged tribes to create their own constitution modeled after the U.S. one.
