Dr.James Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891.

First Game
March 11 1892 the first game of basket ball was played by the students and workers of School of Christian Workers. Though the first game consisted of 18 players, nine on a team. At the end of a 30 minute game the final score stood 1-0. the goal was made by William R.Chase the first person to score a basket in basketball. -
Womens First Game
March 22 1893 the Smith College in Massachusetts was the first school to let women play. NO men were allowed to watch. -
First Professional Game
- The first known professional game was played in Trenton, New Jersey, between the Trenton YMCA agaisnt the Broolyn YMCA. Trenton beat Broolyn 15-1.

The Original Celtics
In 1914 the Original Celtics were created, soon to become the most dominant team throughout the years. The Celtics were also the first team to introduce zone defense and contracts. To this day the Celtics remain the most successful team in terms of championships in the NBA. -
Basket ball or Basketball
1921 the spelling of basket ball becomes basketball. -
ABL
A whole changed when the the American Basketball League(ABL) was created and it attracted many teams as well as fans. -
Depression
When the Great Depression hit the USA, it was not very good for the ABL either, the low quantity of food and money made it hard for the fans as well as teams to be able to compete. So in the years of 1931-1932 and 1932-1933 seasons were suspended. -
Olympics
August 1-16 1936 basketball become an official Olympic sport and USA beats Canada 19-8 to win the gold medal. -
TV
February 28, 1940, first ever televised basketball game at the Madison Square Garden. -
The BAA
June 6 1946 the Basketball Association of America was created. Maurice Podoloff named the league president. -
NBL+BAA=NBA
August 4 1949 six teams from the NBL join the BAA which made up the new league known today called the NBA. -
East vs West
In March 2, 1951 in the forst ever all star game the East defeats the West 111-94. -

October 30 1954 the NBA adds the 24 second clock, thus game speed quickens. -
Hall of Fame
In Feburary 17 1968 the Dr James Naismith hall of fame was opend to the public and inducting Dr James Naismith to the Hall of Fame. The hall of fame has 326 indivisuals and 9 teams. -
Thrid Referee
1978-79 NBA adds third referee. By adding the thrid referee the refs will miss less calls that are imortant. -
NBA Commissioner
On Feburary 1 1984 David Stern becomes the 4th comissioner succeding Lary O Brian, he has since been succeded by Adam Silver. -
WNBA
The NBA agrees to create the WNBA for womens basketball. Currently the WNBA consists of 12 teams, most of them share an arena with the male counterpart NBA team. The league was officialy created April 24, 1996 -
YAO MING
The Houston Rockets decide to select Yao Ming of China as their first pick in the draft. Yao becomes the first player to be drafted in the NBA who is not from the USA.
