1850's Fashion
During the 1850's, men's clothing consisted of a jacket, trousers, a shirt, a vest, and a necktie. The cut of the early 1850's coat is very different from the later 1850's coat. The early 1850's coat consisted of long, narrow sleeves. Around 1854 wider sleeves with shorter collars were introduced. -
1860's Fashion
Men's clothes changed only slightly from the 1850s, but a few small details can help distinguish styles of the 1860s from the previous decade. The wide, tubular trousers and long sack coat are some of these small details that stick out in the 1860's. -
1870's Fashion
The 1870's consisted of a rise of the sack suit while young men could be seen in narrowly tailored sack suits. However, it was still common to see frock coats during the day. On of the most distinctive fashions of this era is the slim cravat with very small bow tie. -
1880's Fashion
The 1880's had a close, tight fit for menswear. Trousers became narrow, as well as short, narrowly fitted jackets with narrow sleeves. Cutaway jackets were introduced in the 1880's and that allowed the bottom of the vest and watch chain to be visible. Stripes also became popular in the 80's. -
1890's Fashion
During the 90's, a greater variety of clothing was available. Men wore clothes ranging from work wear, casual wear, and dress wear. Bib overalls became a statement for the working man. -

The 20th century did not immediately see drastic changes in men's fashion. However, knee-length overcoats were popular during the early 1900s. Long neckties were worn with suits for the first time. Hats and walking sticks were frequently added.
