Alice Duffield was born on September 27, 1896. She was born at Jemmy lind in Sebastian county, ark. She grew up near to a coal mine. -
The Airplane
The airplane was dangerous. It didnt have any paracutes, and was very flammable. It was used to fly over enemy terriotory and later to drop posion gas. -
Archduke Assasination
Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assasinated in Sarajevo. This event sparked war. They believe the enemy assasintated him. -
The Machine Gun
The Machine gun was created by Hiram Maxium. Machine guns were very reliable in WW1. They weighed 30kg-60kg without mountings,carriage and supplies. They were later put onto tanks. -
WW1 begins
Germany invades Belgium. This begins the long war. WW1 involves alot of places and allies. -
The U-Boat
The U-Boat was used primarliy by Germany. It was basically a submarine. They used it for sneak attacks. to defend against these U-Boats they used sonar and depth chargers. -
The Tank
The tank was created by Nikolaus Augustotto, Fredrick Simms, and Alvin O. Lombard. It was primarily used in Trench warfare. It was also used to capture prisoners . -
Getting Started
In 1915 Alice decided she was going to start nursing. She started nursing at the age of 19. They almost didn't take her because she was dressed and looked younger than she really was. She started making $5.00 a month. -
Poison Gas
Posion gas was used to irratate rather than kill people.chlorine, phodgene,and mustard gas was used by Germany. Xylyl was used by the French. They devloped masks to defend against the gas. -
First Tanks
The British employ the first ever tanks used in battle. this took place at Deville Wood. The tanks then are much different than the tanks now. These tanks had been thought of and been designed for years. -
Zimmerman Telegram
British intellegance give Wilson the immerman Telegram. This was a message from Germany proposing Mexico side with Germany. Then for Mexico to take over the United States. -
U.S. enters war
U.S. congress authorizes a Declaration of War against Germany. They choose to side with France and Britian.They choose to help France and Britian since they helped them in the past and would continue to in the future. -
German and Russian peace
The germans sign a treaty with the Bolshevick government of Russia.this gives Germany huge tracts of land and peace on Eastern front, which allows Germany to shift soldiers to the Eastern front causing problems for the French, British, and Americans. -
Recruted
Alice got recruted shortly after her "sick" leave. She came back to the training school only to find her stuff moved. They were sent to talk to Franklin Rooseevlts sister who convined them to help their country out. -
Time for a Break
Alice stopped her nursing.She dropped out due to her marriage. Nurses couldn't be married while in the service, so she had to drop out. She had stopped previously because her baby brother was born and went to help her mother take care of it. -
Leaving an Impression
On Sunday April 14, 2002 alice passed away. She passed away at the age of 105. She was the last living women WW1 veteran in her town.
