Parents
As a child Maya & her brother were sent to live with their grandmother, Daddy Bailey´s (Bailey Johnson Sir) mother. Every since that happened Maya & her brother felt unwanted by their parents after a divorce.At Six Maya´s grandmother took them to live with their parents in California after the reconnecting of their parents. -
Early Life
At the age of 8 Maya was sexually abused & raped by her mother's boyfriend, Freeman.After telling her brother about it later the rest of the family found out. Freeman was found guilty & stayed a day in jail.Four days later after he was released, Freeman was murdered. Maya didn't speak for 5 years because she thought she had killed him after she told his name.She thought her voice would kill people so she never spoke. -
Education
At 16 Maya attended California Labor School were she became the first black female cable car conductor in San Francisco. -
Children
At the age of 17 ,three weeks after she finished school, Maya gave birth to her son Cylde who later changed his name to Guy Johnson. -
Marriage
in 1951 Maya married Greek electrician, former sailor,& aspiring musician Tosh Angelous. -
Over comings of Maya Angelou
After Martin Luther King Jr asked Angelou to organize a march she agreed, Martin was murdered on her 40th birthday. Depression came & she was encouraged out of it by her close friend James Balwin. Maya produced, she wrote & she narrated Blacks,Blues, Black a ten part series of documentaries about the connections between Blues music & black Americans ' African heritages. she called it ''Africanisms.'' -
Accomplishments
Maya was an American poet, a singer, a civil rights activist & a memoirist. She published several books of poetry,3 books of essays, 7 autobiographies & she played roles in movies.1969 She published her first book "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. -
