First death of a loved one
Mary Todd's mother died whens he was 7 years old. She was very close with her mother and this one was one of the first deaths in her life. There are many more, which lead up to her insanity. -
The Shelby Academy
Mary Todd attends the Shelby Female Academy. Her she learns more than most women during her time period. This was unique for her because she came from a small farming family, which was not suited for someone like Abe Lincoln. But because she went to this school and grew up next to Henrey Clay, she was a perfect wife for Abraham Lincoln. -
New Mother
This is the day that Mary's father is remarried to a woman named Elizabeth Humphrey. She brings along nine other children to the already large family. She is important in Mary's life because she and her children have a surprising opinion on the Civil War. -
Abe Lincoln
On this date, Mary Todd marries a young lawyer from Kentucky. Soon she becaome the first lady and is a big help to Abrahm Lincoln. Marrying Abraham Lincoln was one of the biggest events in Mary's life because it is what begins the issue, -
Mary's First Son
Mary and Abraham have their first son, named Robert Todd Lincoln. He is one of the few children who live. He plays an important roll in Mary's life because he helps to do what is best for his mother once he sees her struggles with the many deaths in her life. -
Mary's second son
Edward Baker Lincoln is Mary and Abrahm's second son. He is important to Mary because he is another one of the many deaths that occur in her life. In 1850, Edward dies at the age of 4, leaving Mary devistated. -
Father's death
On this day, Mary loses her father. Now she has lost both her mother and her father and only has he step mother. This is very hard on her, but what she doesn't know, is that she is soon to lose her brothers as well. -
Mary's third son
William Wallace Lincoln is Mary and Abraham's third son. He is a big part in Mary's life because he is yet another death. William dies at the age of 12, and leaves Mary heart broken. -
Mary's last son
Thomas "Tad" Lincoln is the last son of Mary and Abe. He is one of the two children who survive. He is important to his mother because her helps her through her hardships, when no one else is willing to. -
Civil War
Once the Civil War began, Mary Todd helped out her husband as much as she could. She loved helping out with some battle strategies and with the troops. Mary was one of the women who worked as a nurse in the Union Hospitals. -
Troubles with the Family
During the Civil War, Mary's family fights for the Confederacy. She is upset when she finds out that she would have to fight against her brothers. But heart broken when she found out they had died in battle. Her brothers were just a few more deaths in her life. -
To Germany
After the death of her husband, Mary decides to move to Germany with her son, Thomas Lincoln.From there, she argues for a widows pension. She is beginning to lose herself around this time. -
Lincoln's death
On this date, Mary loses the dearest thing to her, her husband. Abraham Lincoln is shot and killed on this day. Mary was sitting right next to him when this happens. She is left traumatized for life. -
Death of Thomas
Thomas dies while trying to help his mother. This is her last straw and she can no longer handle any more deaths. She now moves to the help of her only living son, Robert. -
Insanity
After Thomas dies, her only living son suspects something is wrong with his mother. He has her tested for insanity. It comes back positive, and all he can do is send her to an asylum. -
Believe Insane Asylum
Mary is put into an insane asylum by her son. While she is there she tries to kill herself three times. It is believed she went insane because of all the deaths in her life. She was traumatized for life by seeing many of her loved ones die. -
Final days
A few days after being committed to the insane asylum, Mary tries to convince her son she is sane. She has a second trial in 1876, which declared her sane. She decided to move to France, where she spent her final days. She died at her sisters house on July 16, 1882.
