Mary's Life Journey: Erikson's Stages of Development

  • Infancy Growing Up with My Grandparents

I grew up with my grandparents because my parents worked all day and I only saw them at night. Since my grandparents weren’t able to take care of me as much (my grandfather was sick and my grandma had many responsibilities), I had to learn to do things on my own at a very young age. This helped me build trust in myself and my surroundings. Erikson’s Trust vs. Mistrust stage is about learning to trust the world, and I learned to do so by becoming independent early in life.
  • Adolescence Finding My Passion for Nursing

In 2014, when I started high school, I had to choose a technical course, and I decided to go with nursing. I took a test, met with a school advisor, and followed my preference. I spent two years studying nursing, which included working in hospitals after graduation. Erikson’s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage is about figuring out who you are, and for me, choosing nursing helped me discover my passion for helping others and set me on the path to my future career.
  • Young Adulthood My Relationship and Cultural Differences

In 2022, I started a relationship with my partner. He is from India and I am from DR. Over time, I learned a lot about building intimacy, but our relationship also faced challenges due to cultural differences. Despite these ups and downs, we've worked through misunderstandings and continue to grow together. Erikson’s Intimacy vs. Isolation stage is about forming deep relationships, and I’ve been learning how to balance my connection with my partner while navigating cultural differences.
