To start she stocked small white plastic collars and bright stockings in colours that matched her knitwear. However, she decided she wanted to design and make her own clothes to stock her shop instead of buying it.
She was a self taught designer and attended evening classes on cutting and adjusting mass market patterns, to make sure she got the styles that satisfied customers -
She popularised hot pants and became a British Fashion Icon.

She designed the inside of the mini, it was originally called the Mini Quant, however, it was changed as some people didn't like that her name was on the car. It had black and white seats with red trimmings, the bonnet badge had 'Mary Quant' written over the signature name. Only 2000 were released in the UK so they are rare.
