Mary was born on January 15th 1842, In Fitzroy. She was born to Alexander and Flora Mackilop who raised Mary in Victoria.She Was the eldest of 8, but her brother alexander died at only 11 months old. -
At 16 mary became a clerk for a small shop in Melbourne. She was often turned to and challenged with responsibilities. She worked to provide for her parents and siblings. -
At 18 Mary moved to a small private township named Penola. Here she became a governess to her aunt Margret. This was also her first teaching experience. -
As there were many children, until the early 1860s all the siblings hadn't been together as one. -
Mary makes her official vows and becomes Mary of the cross Makillop, she is the superior of the new religious order, the sisters of St Joseph of the sacred heart. -
Mary opens the first convent cottage in Grote Street, Adelaide and began to teach at St Francis Xavier Hall School.
