    In 1842 Mary Mackillop was born as the eldest into what would become a large family. Mary was born in Fitzroy Melbourne.

    At the age of 16 Mary had to leave school to work. She was forced to do this so she could help support her large family.
  • Moving

    Mary decided to move to Penola where in 1860 she took a job as a governess on her uncle's farm. Here Mary met Fr Tenison Woods and they immediately formed a special friendship.
  • First School

    In 1866 Mary Mackillop ad Fr Woods opened the first catholic school. This school was free so everybody could get an education.
  • Sisters of St Josephs

    Mary and Fr Woods had finally formed a group of Nun’s called the Sisters of St Joseph. Their sign concluded of a cross for Jesus,an M looking thing for Ave Maria and three J’s for John the baptist,Joseph and Jesus.
  • Ex-Communication

    Ex-Communication
    Mary got Ex-Communicated: Mary was Ex Communicated in 1871 by Bishop Sheil. The reason she was excommunicated was for alleged insubordination. This excommunication was removed 8 months later in 1872 when the bishop was on his deathbed.
  • Rome

    Mary sailed to Rome to see the pope so she could get the blessing to rule over her sisters and take charge. This caused her to break her strong relationship with Fr Woods and the relationship was never mended.
  • Death

    In 1909 Mary Mackillop died. Mary died in North Sydney 108 years ago (2017)
  • Beatified

    In 1995 Mary Mackillop was beatified. They had found her first miracle, this miracle was a women who had cancer and was told she would die prayed to Mary Mackillop and a week after she was cured and no cancer was left in her body.
  • Canonised

    In 2010 Australia obtained their first Saint; St Mary MacKillop of the cross. The Vatican had found their second miracle and that allowed Mary to be canonised.
