One priest with influence over the bishop declared publicly he would ruin the director through the Sisterhood. The result was that Mary was excommunicated by Bishop Sheil on 22 September 1871 for alleged insubordination; most of the schools were closed and the Sisterhood almost disbanded. -

Decree from Rome constitutes the Sisters of St Josheph of the Sacred Heart as an approved Regular Congregation with Mother House in North Sydney. Diocesan congregation to be distinct from the other and to make some alterations in their habit and their Rule. -

Mary was recognised as a saint
She was canonised on 17 October 2010, during a public ceremony in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. She is the first Australian to be recognised by the Catholic Church as a saint. Mary MacKillop is the patron saint of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane.
