Important events of the civil rights movement

  • Blacks vs. Schools

    Blacks vs. Schools
    This is a big event because the board of education decided that American public schools have to combine with the blacks school. This is important because it then made them learn to put up with each other.
  • Rosa Parks arrested

    Rosa Parks arrested
    Rosa Parks is arrested because she didn't give her seat up to a white man on the bus. This made everyone in the civil rights movement mad and they all started protesting for equal rights. They also protested for Rosa Parks to be let go from the police. Many Black's went on strike and didn't ride the bus for awhile and walked everywhere they went which hurt the bus company's because they normally are the bus'es only passengers.
  • Desegregation of Buses

    Desegregation of Buses
    The U.S. district court stop the legality of segregated buses. After 12 months the Montgomery bus boycott ends. The bus companies finally get a lot of people riding their buses again.
  • Sit-ins

    Sit-ins
    Four black students have the first sit-in at Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This was a big impact because it then led to nonviolence sit-ins and let blacks and whites talk to each other without violence.
  • Integration of Woolworth's Lunch Counter

    Integration of Woolworth's Lunch Counter
    Workers at Woolworth's lunch counter served their first black customers. This then led to blacks and whites eating at the same places and helped people not be segregated. This also helped bonds with some black and whites.
  • Birmingham Campaign

    Birmingham Campaign
    Protests of the segregation in Alabama. The non-violent protesters are met by police officers and got arrested. They are also met with tear gas and attack dogs and the non-violent protest turns violent.
  • I have a Dream

    I have a Dream
    Dr. King delivers his "I have a Dream Speech" in front of 200,000 civil rights supporters in Washington D.C. This helped white leaders understand what the blacks want with no violence and it is a big movement in civil rights and is now known as one of the most famous speeches in the world.
  • Selma to Montgomery

    Selma to Montgomery
    Marchers from across the country successfully complete their walk from Selma to Montgomery. The first time they tried this they were attacked by the police and racists. This was important because they then let Dr. King tell his famous "How long, Not Long" Speech.
  • Memphis sanitation workers strike.

    Memphis sanitation workers strike.
    Sanitation workers in Memphis Tennessee go on strike because of the unfair working conditions for African- American Workers. This is important because it's not just blacks standing up for themselves now its's also whites standing up for blacks and trying to make working conditions fair.
  • President Johnson signs Civil Rights act of 1968 into law

    President Johnson signs Civil Rights act of 1968 into law
    This made segregation no more and blacks finally got equal rights to whites and they could eat wherever they wanted drink out of whatever they wanted and they could go wherever they wanted. There were no more blacks only and white only signs.
