Luther posts his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg in protest to the sale of indulgences and other corrupt acts. -

Attack of authority
In June and July of 1519 Luther publicly declared that the Bible did not give the pope the exclusive right to interpret scripture, which was a direct attack on the authority of the papacy. -

Excommunication
He is excommunicated for refusing to recant 41 sentences from his writings. -

Luther becomes an Outlaw
The emperor declares Luther an outlaw, banned his literature and required his arrest. -

Creation of the Lutheran Church
Martin Luther founded the Lutheran church after his excommunication. The church believes that god forgives sin through faith alone and on the basis of scripture.
