Diet of Worms
Emperor Charles V ordered Martin Luther to the meeting. Luther was given safe conduct to attend the meeting and defend his positions. Luther stated: "Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason -- I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other -- my conscience is captive to the word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen." -

Kidnapped
Emperor Charles issued the Edict of Worms, declaring Luther a heretic and ordering his death. Therefore, Frederick the Wise of Saxony "kidnapped" Luther and brought him to Wartburg. For a year, Luther lived in a disguise as a nobleman named "Junker Jörg". -

Married Katharina von Bora
In the Middle Ages nuns were not allowed to be unmarried, so Luther helped them find a spouse. Luther helped Katharina find a man, however she found him unacceptable and announced she wanted to wed Luther. Luther, a man whom had often stated how he would never get married, accepted this "proposal" and married the woman. -
