Marie Curie is born
Event #1- Marie Curie was born on November 7th 1867 with the birth name of Maria Sklodowska. She was born in Warsaw, Poland with four older sibling. Her parents were Wladyslaw and Bronislawa Sklodowska. This event is significant because Marie Curie will go on to become one of the the most important scientists in the world of physics. She discovered 2 elements and helped further cancer
treatment.

1st US zoo opens
Event #2- The Philadelphia Zoo was the first US zoo to open and it is still open today. The opening of the zoo was delayed by the American Civil War. When it opened it housed 1000 animals and admission was only 25 cents. This event is significant because it marked the beginning of zoos in America. Nowadays there are 2,400 zoos open in the US.

American Red Cross founded
Event #3- The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton after she worked as a nurse in the American Civil War. She got the idea from seeing the Red Cross in Switzerland. Clara was also the president of the foundation after its founding. This event is significant because now the Red Cross helps out not only America, but other countries after natural disaster strikes.

Marie and Pierre Curie got married
Event #4- Marie married Pierre Curie after meeting him at the home of another scientist. They were not just husband and wife, they were also partners in their work. They worked together until Pierre was hit and killed by a taxi cab in 1911. This event is significant because together they earned a Noble Prize in physics (Stevens 144). He also helped her with her research and worked with her to try to find pitchblade ore residue. (Thomas 276) -
Radium discovered
Event #5- In July 1898 Marie Curie discovered radium. She had gained the knowledge that the are certain metals and ores that have a much stronger radioactivity than expected. Radium is one of those metals. This event is significant because radium will go on to be used in cancer treatment and will get Marie Curie a second Nobel Prize.

American Hall of Fame Founded
Event #6- The Hall of Fame for Great Americans is an outdoor sculpture display of Americans who have made an impact on America. It is located in the campus of the Bronx Community College which used to be part of New York University. It is a national shrine to the great men and woman of America. This is significant because it was the first place where Americans were celebrated for their acheivements.

Radium was first used to treat cancer
Event #7- While radium cannot cure cancer it is able to treat it by using radiation. Marie Curie's radium was used early on to treat ulcers in rodents and it worked very well. In 1904 a doctor first used radium applicators for internal treatment of cancer. This is significant because Marie Curie's discovery was beginning to be used to treat the sick. Radium is still used nowadays to treat cancer patients.

Marie becomes the first woman to win a Nobel Prize
Event #8- Marie Curie won her first Nobel Prize in physics. It was shared with her husband and Henri Becquerel. She earned this for her research on radioactivity. This is significant because Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She opened doors for women in the world of science.

Marie isolated pure radium
Event #9- Eight years after she discovered radium, Marie Curie isolated pure radium (Stevens, 144). She was able to do this by ordering a bunch of trash and going through it to find pitchblende ore residue. Pitchblende ore is very expensive and only mined in Bohemia so this was a cheaper way to find it (Thomas, 275 and 276) This event is significant because now that pure radium has been isolated, Marie can really begin to discover what it can do. -
Marie wins her second Nobel Prize
Event #10- Marie Curie won her second Nobel Prize for her work in chemistry, discovering Polonium and Radium. She did not share this award with anyone, she earned it all with her own work. She also won them both in different catergories. This event is significant because it makes her not only the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, but also the only woman to ever win two Nobel Prizes.

The University of the Philippines College of Law is established
Event #11- The University of the Philippines College of Law, or UP Law, is the flagship college of the seven University of Philippines colleges. It is located in Quezon City. This event is important because some of the most important political figures from the Philippines have graduated from this school.

Radium x-ray used in WWII
Event #13- After Germany and France declared war and Gremany dropped three bombs on France, Marie decided that she needed to do something to help. She manged solicit some money and cars out of a couple of tycoons to help the cause (aip.org). Marie brought radium x-rays to show the docotors where the soldier's had been injured (Thomas, 279). This was significant because it helped save hundreds of soldiers lives, it also showed how radium could be used in medicinal terms. -
1st scheduled airline flight
Event #12- The first scheduled flight in the world was from St. Petersburg to Tampa, Florida across the Tampa Bay. The pilot was Anthony H. Jannus and he flew Benoist type XIV. There was a parade as the plane took off to celebrate this event. This event is significant because without the first scheduled flight then we would not have flights overseas, between countries or even airports. It opened up a new way to travel far distances that was far more suitable than by car.

Serbia and Turkey sign a peace treaty
Event #14- The Treaty of Passarowitz was signed in Pozarevac ending the war between Turkey and Serbia. These two countries had had a rivalry for a very long time and this finally ended it. This event is significat because it restored the Habsburg administration over present day Serbia.

Marie goes to America
Event #15- Marie went to America to recieve a gift of one gram of pure radium from Mrs. William Brown Meloney. To get this gift Presdient Harding set up a presentation ceremony in the White House. While in America, Marie was also able to see radium used as a cancer treatment for her first time. This is significant because it was the first time Marie had been out of Europe and she was able to make connections with powerful people in th United States.

Marie Curie passes away
Event #16- Marie Curie passed away from radium poisioning that she contracted from her research. This lead to the slow decay of her vital organs. She also had a known tubercular lesion on her left lung that she decided not to treat (Thomas 273 and 280) This is significant because it marked the end of the most influential woman scientist in the world life. In her lifetime Marie Curie accomplished much more than most peole will, making her one of the most important people in the history.
