Birth of Maria Theresa
Maria Theresa was born in Vienna on May 13, 1717. She was born to emperor Charles VI. She was the eldest daughter of the emperor. -

The fire extinguisher was first designed in England by Ambrose Godfrey. It contained a fire extinguishing liquid mixed with gun powder. It was connected to a system of fuses which caused the gun powder to explode and spary the liquid. -

Daniel Gabriel Farenheit produced a temperature scale in 1724. This scla eused mercury which when heated raises up. This was the first invention of a mercury thermometer. -
Maria Theresa was Married
Maria Theresa was married to Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine. Because of the marriaged, he was forced to echange his land, Loraine, for Tuscany which was less valuable. Maria and Francis had three daughters within their first three years of marriage. -
Invention of the Franklin Stove
The Franklin Stove was invented around 1740by Benjamin Franklin. It was invented to produce more heat and less smoke than the ordinary fireplace. It was also called a "circulating fireplace" because of the way it heated a room. -
Father Died
Maria was 23 years old when her father died. All of her father's responsibilites were passed on to her. They were passed to her because she was the eldest duaghter and there were no sons. -
Maria Theresa Crowned Queen of Hungary
In 1741, Maria Theresa was crowned Queen of Hungary. Only a short year after her father had died and she was already gaining power. Now Maria Theresa had conrol not only of the land hr father controlled, but she now had control over her own land. -
Maria Secures Austrian Throne
Maria tried to gain back Silesia in the first two Silesian Wars. She failed at both attempts, but still manged to achieve something imprtant. Through two treaties, she secured the Austrian Throne. -
Maria Signed Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle of 1748
Fighting had been going on for eight years, since Charles VI died. Finally, after eight years a treaty was signed. The Habsburgs lost Silesia,Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla at the end of this ongoing war. -
Constructed New Canon Law
There was tension between Vienna and Rome due to the com=nflict between the Church and State in Austria. Maria believed the Austrian clergy should be taxed. When no one responded to her request, she had he court lawyers construct a new canon law. -
Husband Died
In 1765, Maria's husband, Francis I died. This meant that the eldest son, Joseph, became the emperor and co-regent. He was the first male Habsburg since Maria's father, Charles VI. -
First Partiton of Poland
Maria Theresa took part in the first partition of Poland in 1772, as she had no choice. Had she not, the position of the habsburgs would have been weakened. She took Galicia with its three million inhabitants and wonderful salt mines. -
First Flush Toilet
Many versions of the flush toilet were invented before this, but this is the one still in use today. It was invented by Alexander Cummings in 1775. It used what is called and S-trap to prevent foul smell coming from the sewer. -
First Military Submarine
The first military submarine was designed by Davis Bushnell in 1775. It was called the Turtle and designed for only one person. However, it failed to sink the British warship during the American Revolutionary War. -
Death of Maria Theresa
Maria Theresa died on November 29, 1780. Her health had been deterioating throughout that year. Her final cause of death was probably a heart conditon. -
