Marcus
He was a doctor and really tried to be with the Indians and have a good relationship. Due to unsuccessful mission it was canceled in 1842 but with some persuasion Marcus came back in 1843. With him came 1,000 pioneers and the first Great Migration on the Oregon Trail. He and Narcissa ended up 11 children due to immigrants who diedon the journy. Unfortunately Marcus was to distracted by the white settlers to try and minister the Cayuse.

Never really tried to become friend with Cayuse and didn't like their way of living. Her eyesight bagan to fail and was killed in the massacre.

Their Relationship
The Whitmans met when Marcus was staying at her house for the weekend and Narcissa wasn't able to make a mission without a spouce. So since both wanted to become a part of a mission they married.

The Mission
The Whitmans set up their methodist mission near Walla Walla and decided to teach the cayuse Indians about christianity and to farm and ranch successfuly. Coming from New York, their trip was the longest expidition with wagon train and Narcissa and the other women of the couple they traveled with were the first white women to cross the Rockies.

Their Child
The date is unknown but in 1839 their one and only biological daughter drowned at the age of two.

Ransom
The indians had a ransom for the 54 people to be released. They wanted and recieved 62 blankets, 63 cotton shirts, 12 muskets, 600 loads of ammunition, 37 lbs of tobacco, 12 flints.

Measels Spread
As white settlers cam through they brought new diseases that the indians had experience with like measels. Also the indians thought they might try and steal their land. As this spread threw villiages Dr. Whitman was trying to cure them but a rumor started that he was giving the Cayuse disease ridden blankets because only they were dying not the white settlers.

Volunteer Army to Fight Cayuse
Not long after the killings, kidnapping, and the ransom a volunteer army was made to fight the Cayuse which resulted in the Cayuse War.
