Due to the nationalist government's failures, the communist party helping rebuild destroyed towns, and generally helping the citizen of China, the party grew exponentially, gaining about 1.2 million members by 1945. -
The Communists win the Civil War
After 23 years of civil war, the communists, and Mao Zedong, emerge victorious over Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Nationalist party. Their victory can be attributed partly to, Corruption in the nationalist party, Nationalist soldiers defecting, and strong support from the Chinese people. -
Mao Zedong starts the Great Leap Forward
This plan would have land be taken over by the state and worked in a series of agricultural communes. There were things that lead to this plan failing such as Mao treating people as easily replaceable widgets. They also had people working in professions they had no experience in. For example farmers were told to build factories, and engineers were told to farm rice. When they failed it was seen as a lack of devotion rater than a lack of required skills. -
The Cultural Revolution Begins
after the failure of the Great Leaf Forward the country slowly started to inch towards capitalism. Seeing that his methods were being threatened, Mao stated all who opposed his methods were capitalists and therefore subversive. He proceeded to lunch the Cultural Revolution in 1966 where Intellectuals were persecuted, offenders were either executed or were sent to re education camps where they were brainwashed. -
Mao Zedong Dies
Mao Zedong died in 1976 of a heart attack putting an end to the cultural revolution
