  • Rupert's Land is purchased by Canada

    Purchased the territory from the HBC for $1.5 million
    - Trade with U.S. was growing steadily
    - America newcomers arriving
    - Red River worried that the U.S. would take the land before Canada.
  • Armed Metis Stop Surveyors

    The surveyors job was to prepare for the rush of farming colonists. The Government had never warned the Metis and the local First Nations about them so when the surveyors came Louis Riel told them to leave Red River. The Metis knew they would be back so they prepared what they will do which was to protect their rights with a Nationtional Committee and in December they took Fort Garry.
  • Thomas Scott is killed

    Scott was a prisoner of the Metis who threatened to kill Riel and insulted the Metis guards. Eventually the Metis were fed up with this and put Thomas on trial, he was found guility and was placed in front of a firing squad and was killed.
  • Creation of the Manitoba Act

    The act created Canada's fifth province. Some of the terms were that Manitoba would have it's own government, a area of land would be only for Metis, French and English would be used in courts and government, the province would have four elected members and 2 members to senate and 2 funded schools for both religions and languages.
  • A Group of Metis travel to the States to bring Riel back to Canada

    • 12 Metis were inprisoned
    • Riel betrayed one country and the jury stated guility.
  • The Metis defeat police at Duck Lake

    • Metis defeated a group of Northwest Mountain Police.
    • Cree joined resistants.
  • Metis and Cree people surrender

    • Federal government sends thousands of soliders to the newly built railway
    • Metis surrender after the war.
    • Resistance was over.
