Mayflower Compact- This document was the first form of “self-government” that the Pilgrims used. Once deciding on their new location, forty-eight Pilgrims signed the document hoping for it to be their “constitution”. I think this characteristic would be a social contract because they were the first laws the Pilgrims made. -

Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention- Patrick Henry’s speech was about patriotism and liberty. This speech is famous for him saying “give me liberty or give me death!” This speech’s characteristic would be patriotism because he feels very strongly about his country. -

Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense”- Thomas Paine wrote his pamphlet in plain English to common Americans. This pamphlet was the first thing that moved America to asking Britain for Independence. This event belongs in the characteristic of freedom because the pamphlet is what moved Americans to ask for freedom from Brittain. -

Declaration of Independence- During the Revolutionary War, the longing for independence from Britain had grown, so a five-man committee had the task of making a statement of the colonies' desires. Signing of the document is how the U.S established independence from Brittan. I think that this characteristic would be freedom because the document was written to get freedom from Britain. -

Constitution of the United States of America- The Constitution declared America’s laws and government structure. The federal government made a plan to make a three-branch legislative branch so that one branch wouldn’t have too much power. I think that this falls in the characteristic of social contract because it talks about laws and what happens when you break them. -

The opening of Ellis Island- Ellis Island was an immigration station. Even though Ellis Island closed in 1954, millions of immigrants came through Ellis Island and 40% of American citizens can trace one of their ancestors to Ellis Island. I think that Ellis Island’s characteristic would be The American Dream because so many immigrants came to America through Ellis Island in hopes of a better life. -
Plessy v. Ferguson

Plessy v. Ferguson- Plessy was arrested for siting in a “white” carrier car. Plessy, seven-eighths white and one-eighth black, could easily be taken as a white man but got arrested because of the percentage of black in him. I think that this goes in the character of equity and equality because the Plessy decision set the law that facilities that were separate were constitutional as long as they were equal. -

The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes- The state of Tennessee banned the teachings of evolution in schools in the state of Tennessee. John scopes ,a science teacher in Tennessee, taught evolution in his science class against the state’s law and got arrested. Eventually the law stating that evolution could not be taught in schools was defeated. I think that this characteristic would be church and state because the
church and state were separated. -

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech- Roosevelt made a speech trying to convince the American people that continuing helping the British was a smart idea. At this point in time many Americans had become isolated from the president and were convinced that America could stay out of the war.I think that this speech belongs in Global Standing
because Roosevelt is stating how the U.S will continue to act with Brittan. -

Attack on Pearl Harbor -The Japanese attacked a naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii even though the attack only lasted two hours the devastation was grand. 20 American vessels and 200 airplanes were destroyed and 2,000 Americans were killed. I think that this attack belongs in Patriotism because this tradegy brought many people together. -
Brown vs. board of education

Brown vs. board of education – Oliver Brown went to court when his child got denied access to one of Topeka Kansas’ white schools. The court found that the schools were separate but not equal and also that black girls in black schools had low self-esteem. I think that Brown vs. board of education belongs in the characteristic of Equality and Equity because this court decision gave schools equality. -

Little Rock Nine- Nine African-American high school students were allowed admittance in a once all white Little Rock Central High. Outside the school there were rebellious people that did not approve of the African-Americans in their school. Eventually President Eisenhower called in armed airborne divers who protected the students on the way to school. I think that this belongs in equality and equity because the -
9/11
9/11- 9/11 was a tragedy so horrific that it alone brought all of America together. Terrorists took over multiple planes and crashed into the twin towers and the Pentagon. There was also another plane that was headed for the White House but the passengers took over and tried to steer the plane themselves. Thousands of Americans died on that day. I think that 9/11 falls under patriotism because a tragedy happened and it brought many Americans together.

President Obama’s first Inaugural Speech- Barack Obama’s first inaugural speech was in 2009. He promised “a new era of responsibility”. Obama promised hope and prosperity for the country. I think that his speech falls in the characteristic of Social Contract and Global standing because he is talking to America about law and about what he thinks of the U.S.
