The French and Indian War
The war was between Britain and France. Britain wanted territory in the Ohio Valley so they could trade with the Native Americans there.The French already had forts built for trading with the Native Americans and they didn't like Britain getting in the way.The war ended with The Treaty of Paris. -
Boston Massacre
British troops and the American colonists are the people that took part in this event in history. British soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists while being attacked by a mob.This happened in Boston, Massachusetts. A mob of patriots attacked a British soldier while he was guarding the King's money. He called for reinforcements. I thought this was a very significant part of history because this event turned into propaganda during the Revolutionary War. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration was signed on this day in history. The colonies declare independence from Great Britain. This was an act of treason and that is why we had the Revolutionary War. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement between the 13 colonies. It was ratified on this day. It was the first Constitution of the US. The Articles included a weak central government and gave most of the power to the state governments. -
First President
George Washington became our first president. He was also one of our founding fathers.He led the Patriots in a defeat over Britain in the Revolutionary War. George Washington set the example for only running for two terms. -
Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments in the Constitution. The amendments guaranteed freedoms and rights that were not guaranteed in the Constitution. James Madison wrote the amendments. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was passes by the United States Congress. It was strengthened in 1850 as a compromise. It required governments and free states to enforce the capture and return of slaves. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana purchase was a land deal.The deal was between the United States and France. The US received 827,000 square miles for 15 million dollars. -
Act of Prohibiting Importation of Slaves
The Act of Prohibiting Importation of Slaves was enacted by the ninth United States Congress. It is a federal law that stated that no new slaves were to be imported. The act was taken into effect on January 1,1808. This event is important because it was the start of abolishing slavery. -
Battle of Tippecanoe
The battle took place in Battle Ground, Indiana.The battle was between Native American warriors and American forces. Tecumseh, a Shawnee tribe leader, led the Native Americans.Governor William Henry Harrison led the American forces. Harrison marched troops just outside an Indian village and Tecumseh's brother engaged in a fight with the soldiers. The Americans won the battle but suffered many loses. After this battle Tecumseh could no longer convince natives to join forces against the colonies. -
War of 1812
The war was between Britain and the US. Britain wanted to reclaim the northern territory. This event is important because it showed that the US could beat Britain more than once and that the US wasn't going anywhere. -
The White House Burning
British troops set fire to the White House during the War of 1812. They did it in retaliation of the US attacking Ontario, Canada. President James Madison had already fled the White House before the troops had gotten there. -
The Trail of Tears
Some 16,000 Native Americans were forcibly marched over 1,200 miles. Over 4,000 died of famine, disease, and warfare. The trail ended in Oklahoma. This happened because whites wanted the land of the Native Americans, so President Andrew Jackson had them forcibly relocated. -
The Mexican War
Some of the causes of the war was westward expansions, economics, and the southern states of the US wanted more slave states to have more political power. It was the first US conflict chiefly fought on foreign soil. The US won and Mexico lost about one-third of its territory. -
California Genocide
During the gold rush, many people were encouraged to get rid of the Native Americans that lived there at the time.There were laws passed that allowed white settlers to take away Native American children and arrest them. Eventually, people were being payed by the government to kill and enslave them all. Up to 16,000 Native Americans died and some tribes were totally obliterated. -
The Gold Rush
Gold was discovered in California at Suter's Mill. The man that found the gold was James W. Marshall. There were also other places where people struck gold. This attracted more than 300,000 people from the US and people from other countries.This led to California becoming a state. -
Civil War
The Civil War was between the South and the North parts of the US. The war was over slavery. Southern states wanted to keep slavery, but the northern states did not want it. The North won and slavery was abolished. -
Lincoln's Assassination
Abe Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. It was the first time ever a President had been assassinated. He was killed while in the Ford's Theater. -
The Great Chicago Fire
The fire took place in Chicago, Illinois. Tens of thousands of buildings were destroyed and up to three hundred people died. The dry weather and the many wooden buildings made Chicago vulnerable to fire. The fire went out when it started raining a few days after the fire started. -
Yellowstone National Park
The Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the US and is held to be the first in the world.Native Americans have lived in the rejoin for at least 11,000 years. It was established by Congress and signed into law by Ulysses S. Grant.
