Emancipation Proclamation
Declared "forever free" the slaves in those confederate area still in rebellion. It didn't free any slaves immediately. It removes any change of a negotiated settlement with the South and influences Britain to stay out of the war. -

Ceremony to dedicate a cemetery were the Battle of Gettysburg took place. -
Election of 1864
An election that took place during the civil war. With Abraham Lincoln winning the election against his opponent George McClellan. -
Black Codes
Black codes are laws designed to regulate the affairs of the emancipated blacks and keep them as slaves. It was hard to rise economically and the emancipated blacks became slaves to the soil once again. It also forced blacks to sign labor contracts with minimal pay and penalties if they "jumped" their contract. -
Lee Surrenders
Union corners Lee at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia. Grant offers generous terms "The war is over the rebels are our countrymen again. Which in turn, ended up officially ending the civil war. -
Lincoln's Assassination
Lincoln goes to Ford's Theater to watch "Our American Cousin." Pro-southern actor- John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head at Ford's Theater. Booth would be killed 12 days later. -
Ku Klux Klan
This was a group of whites that pretended to be ghosts and hurt and killed many blacks, due to them having some freedom. -
14th Amendment
Provided equal protection under law and issues related to former slaves. -
Reconstruction Act
Divided the South into 5 military districts, each commanded by a general. Also, required that states wishing to be administered had to pass the 14th Amendment. -
15th Amendment
Granted black men the right to vote.
