The south attacks Fort Sumter
The Battle of Fort Sumter lasted 2 days. The advantages at the Battle of Fort Sumter were Confederates because the Union was on an island with limited supplies. Confederates probably felt that extremely happy and prideful because they won the battle at Fort Sumter. The Union soldiers were wanting to avenge Fort Sumter. Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13. Confederate troops then occupied Fort Sumter for nearly four years, resisting several bombardments by Union forces. -
Bull run ends the ninety day war
President Abraham Lincoln decided to attack a small Confederate force at Bull Run. If successful, the victory would show the superiority of Union arms and might eventually lead to the capture of Richmond. On July 21, 1861, the Union and Confederate forces met. Robert E. Lee surrenders
In Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Lee sent a message to Grant announcing his willingness to surrender. Sherman was victorious over the Confederates in North Carolina and Grant broke through the Confederate defenses as Petersburg. Lee was for forced to retreat from Richmond and his starving troops were surrounded by Union troops.
