    -25 miles from Washington D.C.
    -Press Demanded for action
    -Lincoln decides to attack - 30,000 troops go on offense
    -In morning the Union gains the upper hand, but Confederates held firm under leadership.
    -By afternoon, Union soldiers were forced to retreat.
  • Merrimack Vs. Monitor

    Merrimack Vs. Monitor
    The Merrimack (CSA), was an old wooden U.S warship that was platted with old iron railroad rails and ended up destroying several Union ships off the coast of Virginia. The Monitor (USA), arrives the next day and fights the Merrimack for several hours, but the ships retreat in a draw. Significance: Marks a turning point in naval history - ironclads.
  • The Peninsula Campaign

    The Peninsula Campaign
    Was a large scale operation by the Union to capture the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Va. It was unsuccessful and if it was successful the Union would've been restored by slavery would've survived.
  • Battle of Richmond

    Battle of Richmond
    Led by Major Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith against Union major general William "Bull" Nelson's forces, which were defending the town. It would end up being one of the most complete Confederate victories in the war.
  • Antietam

    Robert E. Lee went north and invaded Maryland. The north and the met. Then, the Union would later find a copy of General Lee's plans and would catch up with him near Antietam Creek. It was the Bloodiest single day battle of war with 24,000-26,000 casualties.
  • Vicksburg, Mississippi

    Vicksburg, Mississippi
    -One of the last remaining strongholds on the Mississippi River.
    -Union forces lay siege to the town for six weeks.
    -City surrendered on July 4th, 1863
    -This victory helped the Union split the South in half.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    The Battle of Gettysburg was the last battle to be fought on Union soil. The Union, took defensive positions on hill and held the high ground. General Lee would order the attack on Cemetery Ridge and later orders artillery barrage in preparation for attack. Casualties: North: 23,000, South: 28,000.
  • Pickett's Charge

    Pickett's Charge
    Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault ordered by Confederate Gen. Lee against Gen. Meade. This took place on the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg, and was a huge mistake for the Confederacy. A total of 10,000 casualties would be made this day.
  • Appomattox

    Appomattox
    The Union corners Lee at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia. Grant offers generous terms “The war is over the rebels are our countrymen again”. Lee ends up surrendering and a total of 650,000 soldiers die throughout the course of the war, the war costs 15 million dollars, and the South is destroyed.
