Hitler Invades Yugoslavia & Greece
German troops invade Yugoslavia & Greece in order to protect Germans there. Yugoslav resitance was strong, and Britain tried to help Greece. In the end, Yugoslavia surrendered. Image: Link -
U.S Begins Nuclear Bomb Program
America began a program to develop an atomic bomb in October, 1941. It was called the Manhatten Project, and many scientists from Britain and Canada came to work on it. It ended up employing over 100,000 people. -
Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor
The Japanese attacked the Americans at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The U.S. Battleships were damaged and 2,350 Americans were killed. The United States were entered in the war against Japan, and this gave them the chance to aid Britain in fighting Hitler. Image: Link -
Battle of the Atlantic
The Battle of the Atlantic started with German U-Boat patrolling. They would patrol the Atlantic in effort to stop supplies from America to Britain. Germany used unrestricted submarine warfare, so the allies countereacted that with a convoy system. Image: Link -
Atomic Breakthrough
On December 2, 1942, the Unites States made an important breakthrough with the Manhatten Project. It was made by scientists Enrico Fermi and Arthur Compton. They discovered that the atomic pile can produce energy and plutonium. -
Unconditional Surrender
During the month of January, 1943, President Roosevelt announces his unconditional surrender policy. He made it towards Japan and Germany. It states that America will only take an unconditional surrender from both countries. -
Helena Shoots Japanese

D-Day, Allies land in France
The Allies landed at Normany, France, on June 6th, 1944. This was held by Dwight Eisenhower. They fought on Omaha beach and pushed back to Paris. Paris surrendered two months later. Image: Link -
Allies Agree to Bomb Japan
On September 19th, 1944, the Allies agreed to bomb Japan. Roosevelt and Churchill secretly decided to use the atomic bomb against them when it is ready. They did not tell the Soviet Union of this decision. Image: Link -
Bomb Fuel Production
Production of fuel for the atomic bomb started in early 1945. It began at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The production of plutonium was also taking place at the same time in Hanford, Washington. -
Franklin Roosevelt Dies

On July 16th, 1945, an atomic bomb was tested. They tested it near Alamogordo, New Mexico. It was successful! -
Truman and Stalin
On July 24th, 1945, Truman tells Stalin about his plans for Japan. He tells him that the U.S. Has developed something with "unusual destructive force," but does not name details. He dosn't know that Stalin had spies over and already knew this. -

On August 6th, 1945, the U.S drops the first bomb on Hirishima, Japan. It kills 140,000 people. On August 8th, the Soviet Union declares war on Japan and invades Manchuria. On August 9th, the U.S. drops the second bomb on Nagasaki, killing between 40,000 and 75,000 people, -
Japan Surrenders
