    Philip II
    [359-336 BC] Philip II (359-336 BC) raises Macedonia into the greatest European Power after subduing all of Macedonia's neighbors - Illyrians, Thracians, and Greeks. The Battle of Chaeronea where the Macedonians defeat the Greeks on August 2, 338 BC, marks an end of Greek history and the beginning of the Macedonian Era. The ancient Greek writer Theopompus declares Philip “the greatest man that Europe had ever given.”

    Young Macedonia Literary Society
    The Young Macedonian Literary Society was founded in 1891, in Sofia, together with its magazine Loza. The society formed primarily as a scholarly and literary organization.
    After a distinct Bulgarian state was established in 1878, Macedonia remained outside its borders. In the 1880s, the Bulgarian codifications rejected the idea of a Macedonia-Bulgarian linguistic compromise and chose eastern Bulgarian dialects as a basis for standard Bulgarian.

    The Balkan Wars in 1912 and 1913, and World War I divided the region of Macedonia amongst the Kingdom of Greece, the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Serbia. After Bulgaria switched sides in the war in September 1944, the Bulgarian 5th Army stationed in Macedonia, and moved back to the old borders of Bulgaria. It was occupied by the Kingdom of Bulgaria during World War 1 between 1915-1918.

    Ottoman control was brought to an end by the Balkan Wars (1912–13), after which Macedonia was divided among Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Following World War I, the Serbian segment was incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (renamed Yugoslavia in 1929). After World War II the Serbian part of Macedonia became a constituent republic within the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia (later the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia).

    The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes is founded and is renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War I Serbia added part of Macedonia to its territory and in this context, it seems logical that Macedonia became one of the Republics of Yugoslavia.

    U.N Security Council 817, adopted unanimously on 7 April 1993, after examining the application of the Republic of Macedonia for membership in the United Nations, the Council recommended to the General Assembly that Macedonia be admitted to membership in the United Nations, this State being provisionally referred to for all purposes within the United Nations as "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" pending settlement of the difference that has arisen over the name of the State.

    Almost 435,000 refugees had to leave Kosovo for Albania, according to the UNHCR. Most of them arrived directly in Albania and some of them were transferred from Macedonia. At the height of the Kosovo War, refugees were crossing the border into Albania at the rate of 4,000 people per hour.

    Macedonia's formal application for EU membership was delivered by Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski to the Irish Presidency in Dublin on 22 March. The event took place less than a month after the previous attempt on 26 February, which was canceled following the news of Macedonia's President Boris Trajkovski untimely death in a plane crash just hours before Mr. Crvenkovski was scheduled to hand in Macedonia's application documents.
