    Luis Valdez was born on June 26, 1940 in Delano California. He is the 2 kid of 10 children, to parents Armeda and Francisco Valdez who were migrant farm workers from Mexico.

    His interest in theater started in 1st grade. Valdez organized plays in school and puppet shows in his garage but he recalls that most of them were about fairy tales. In high school he was part of the speech and drama department and acted in several plays. Later on he graduated from James Lick High School and went on to SJSU.

    Valdez had received a scholarship to attend San José Sate University for math and physics. In his second year of college he switched his major to English.
  • Winning a playwright contest

    While in college, Valdez won a playwriting contest with his one-act play The Theft in 1961.
  • First play

    2 years later Valdez’s first full-length play, The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa, that was produced by the drama department and debuted at SJSU.
