Loyalist Timeline

  • Closest Colony to Escape to

Canada and the Maritimes were the closest colonies for Loyalists to migrate to, to escape the war in America. This was happening during the war, as it became apparent that Britain was losing the war. Approximately 43,600 loyalists came to Canada in total. (random date)
  • The American Revolution

The American Revolution ended, with the loyalists and Britian losing. The loyalists were no longer welcome in America as they had supported the British.
  • Violence in America

After the war, the only stronghold that Britain still held was New York. Loyalists gathered there, but in 1783, Britain left New York for the Americans. The Loyalists remaining everywhere, not just New York, suffered from attacks from Patriots after the war. There was bloodshed and gangs of Americans attacks the Loyalists, and sometimes started gang fights between Loyalists and Patriots.
  • Britain Weakens

After the war, Britain was significantly weaker. They had lost their entire hold on America to the Patriots, and they were lessening their power as a world superpower. The sudden loss in the side they were supporting prompted some loyalists to move to other countries, like Canada, to start a clean slate. (random date as this was happening ever since the end of the war)
  • Compensation for War Losses

Britain was giving war compensations for Loyalists who had supported them through the war and lost things like their families, their homes, and personal items to the Patriots in the act. Britain gave land at times, so some Loyalists came to Canada to claim that land. (again, a random date)
