    Stylistic trends include the light, cheery manner of Rococo paintings which often focused on frivolous mythological scenes. A facination with science and the discoveries of the enlightenment also pervaded art and Tenebrism was often featured in art.

  • Enlightenment

    The Enlightenment gradually developed and produced thinkers such as Locke and Newton who emphasized reason and clear thought. In 1702 Bernard de Fontenelle proclaimed the name Enlightenment.

    In about 1760, the Industrial Revolution began to develop and its effects include the migration of the poor rural farners to cities, the increased importance of factories and manufacturing, and the domination of middle class merchants and industrialists.
