Louis Braille was born on January 4th, 1809 in Coupvray, France. -
Loss of Sight
Louis loses his sight at age three because he was stabbed in the eye with a knife when playing in his father's shop. -
Beginning of Education and Religion
Father Coupvray gives Louis an education and teaches him about religion when he becomes a priest at a local church. -
Move to Paris
Louis moves to Paris to attend the Royal Institute for Blind Youth. -
Start of Braille System
After learning Barbiers' night-writing system, Louis makes improvements, leading to the development of his own system. -
Night Writing
This was meant for the French military, and Louis experiments with it. It used to have a twelve dot cell, but a person's finger could not feel all the dots at once. Therefore, he changed it to a six dot cell. -
Louis's System is Completed
His system is completely developed, a six dot cell based on normal spelling, and it's resented to Dr. Pignier, the director of the Royal Institute for Blind Youth. -
Student to Teacher
Louis graduates and becomes a teacher for other blind students. -
First Book
Louis creates his first book in braille and uses it to teach and describe his system. -
Teaching at Royal Institute for Blind Youth
Louis becomes a full time teacher and uses his system, which is known as Braille in honor of him, to teach his pupils. -
Published
Louis publishes his system that enables the blind to read. -
Lung Disease
Doctors diagnose Louis with tuberculosis at age twenty-six. -
Raphigraphy
Louis invents raphigraphy, a raised dots in the shape of letters, so that those that aren't blind can read it too. -
Braille Printer
Louis and his friend create a asy to print Braille faster. -
Royal Institute for Blind Youth
Louis insists that his old school is finally moved to a healthier facility. -
Death
Louis dies from tuberculosis two days after his birthday.
