Limits of a Superpower

  • Demands for Minority Rights

    Many minorities wanted to gain both relief from discrimination and recognition for their contributions to the U.S. society.
  • Southern Strategy

    To win over the south, Nixon asked the federal courts in the region to depla integration plans and busing orders. He then nominated two Southern conservatives to the Supreme Court.
  • Richard Nixon's Foregin Policy

    Nixon wanted to gradually reduce the amount of U.S. troops in Vietnam. He began the process of Vietnamization, reducing the U.S. troops from 540,000 in 1969 to 30,000 in 1972.
  • Opposition to Nixon's War Policies

    Nixon expanded the war by using U.S. troops to invade Cambodia. A protest erupted against this action. Four students were killed at Kent State and two were killed at Jackson State.
  • The New Federalism

    Nixon proposed the Family Asistance Plan, which replaced welfare by providing a guaranteed annual income for the working Americans. Nixon tried to bypass Congress by not spending funds on social programs.
  • Nixon's Economic Policies

    Nixon tried to slow down inflation by cutting federal spending. This only led to a recession and unemployment. He then ordered a 90-day wage and price freeze and took the dollar off the gold standard and this resulted in improved U.S. balance od trade with foreign competitors.
  • Peace Talks

    Nixon and Kissinger were trying to come to an agreement with North Vietnam's foregin minister, Le Duc Tho. When they couldnt come o an agreement, Nixon ordered bombings on North Vietnam to force a settlement.
  • Detente with China

    Nixon traveled to China to imporve relations with China. His visit initiated diplomatic exchanges that eventually led to the U.S. recognition of the Communist government.
  • Watergate

    A group of men that were hired by Nixon's reelection committee were caught breaking itno the offices of the Democratic national headquarters in the Watergate complex. Nixon was found to be related to the act and he lost trust in the act.
  • War Powers Act

    Nixonwas found to be committing secret bombings in Cambodia and as a result wasforced to pass the War Powers Act, which stated that the president must inform Congress of military action within 48 hours of it.

  • Genocide in Cambodia

    Khmer Rouge killed millions in order to get rid of any western influence in Cambodia.
  • Camp David Accords

    Carter created a peace settlement between Egypt and Israel. Egypt became the first Arab nation to recognize the nation of Israel.
  • Arms Control with the U.S.S.R.

    Nixon used his rel;ationship with China to pressure the Soviets into agreeing toa treaty that limited antiballistic missiles (SALT I).
  • Iran and the Hostage Crisis

    Islamic fundamentalists in Iran overthrew the shah who was the leading Iranian government. The shah had kept the oil flowing in the west but his policy of westernization alienated a large population of Iranians. Iranian militants then seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran and held hostages.
  • Panama Canal

    The Carter administration attempted to correct inequalities in the original Panama Canal Treaty of 1903 by negotiating a new treaty.
