Saint Ignatius of Loyola, then known as Inigo Lopez de Loyola, is born in Loyola, a city in the Basque Region of Spain. He was the youngest of 13 children in the Loyola family. -

Ignatius joins the Spanish Military
Ignatius joined the army for the Duke of Najera. He loved being a soldier and wanted to be a war hero. Ignatius liked to drink, be with women, get in fights with people, and gamble. -

Sometime between 1503 and 1519, Leornardo da Vinci completes the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world. Today it hangs in the Louvre in Paris. -

Ignatius gets hit by a cannonball
On May 20 1521, French soldiers attacked Pamplona, Spain, the city that Ignatius and the Spanish were defending. During the battle, Ignatius was hit by a cannonball. Outnumbered, the Spanish were defeated.
Ignatius later returns to the Loyola Castle where he underwent many painful operations to fix his leg.
While he was recovering, Ignatius read two books, the Lives of the Saints and The Life of Christ. After reading these, he became interested in Christianity and wished to be a soldier of God. -

Ignatius vists Santa Maria de Montserrat
In March of 1522, Ignatius visted Santa Maria de Monserrat, a Benedictine monastary in northern Spain.
In the following weeks, Ignatius traveled to Manresa where he spends months in a cave writing the Spiritual Exercises. -

Ignatius travels to the Holy Land
In August of 1523, Ignatius set sail for the Holy Land. He had intended to go to Jerusalem and stay there his whole life helping people. When he arrived in September, the Franciscan friars told him to leave because the Turks, who controlled Jerusalem at the time, did not want Christians there. -

Ignatius goes back to school
When Ignatius returned from his trip to Jersualem, he went to Barcelona. There, he decided to go back to school as an ordinary student to learn Latin. As he was 33 and the students were 7, Ignatius was often made fun of. After school, Ignatius would do more charity work, like visting the sick in hospitals. This made it very difficult to keep up with the rest of the students because he had less time to do his school work. -

Ignatius begins his studies in Alcala
Ready for higher education, Ignatius begins attending the University of Alcala in Spain.There, Ignatius gained his first folowers. After preaching in town, he was arrested by the Inquisition. They let Ignatius go free, but Ignatius decided it was best to leave Alcala to attend the university in Salamanca. -

Ignatius attends the University of Paris
After another close encounter with the Inquisition at Salamanca, Ignatius decided to go to college in Paris. There, he roomed with Francis Xavier and Peter Favre. Eventually, he convinced both of them to follow him. -

Ignatius and followers take their First Vows
In Monmarte, Ignatius and his followers took their First Vows. The Company of Jesus is created. -
