Scottsboro Boys
The Scottsboro Boys were nine black teenagers accused of rape in Alabama in 1931. The landmark set of legal cases from this incident dealt with racism and the right to a fair trial. The case included a frameup, an all-white jury, rushed trials, an attempted lynching, and an angry mob; it is frequently given as an example of an overall miscarriage of justice. -
Rosa Parks gets arrested
On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to move from her seat on the front of the bus. Due to the segregation laws, blacks were only allowed to sit in the back of the bus. This is when Rosa decided that this was not fair, and she was going to sit in the front of the bus. This was also the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which continued and eventually ended in 1956. VIDEO -
NAACP Award
In 1980, Rosa was presented with an award given to her by Martin Luther King Jr.. This award was in honor of the NAACP. In the following years, Rosa was presented with many other awards including the Women's Hall of Fame, Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience, Presidential Medal of Freedom, International Freedom Conductor Award, Congressional Gold Medal, International Freedom, Most Influencial Figures, Medal of Honor, and the Alabama Academy Award. Death
On October 24, 2005 Rosa Parks passed away. She goes down in history as one of the bravest and influential women of all time. Along with all of her awards, in 2006 a statue of Rosa was placed in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.. VIDEO
