Behind her are a boy who reaches for the fruit and a nursemaid who is breastfeeding a baby. The drapes are drawn to reveal a kitchen maid at a fireplace and, beside her, a painting of a unicorn, which symbolized virginity. It is believed that the woman in the painting was Diane de Poitiers, the famous mistress of Henry II
