Life of Edgar Allan Poe

  • Birth of Edar Allan Poe

    Poe is born in Boston, Massachussetts to two actors.
  • His mother, Elizabeth, dies.

    Having no other close relatives, Poe becomes an orphan, and is has to move in with his aunt and uncle in Richmond, Virginia.
  • The Allan's move to England.

  • The Allan's return to the United States.

  • Poe attends University of Virginia

    Due to his success in school, Poe is admitted to the University of Virginia with the assistance of his uncle. He does well for the first year, but soon is forced to withdraw due to his uncle's excessive gambling problem.
  • Poe writes and prints his first book.

    Poe writes and prints his first book, "Tamerlane and other Poems". The book recieves minimal attention.
  • Applies to West Point Military School.

    Supported by his uncle, John Allen.
  • Attains rank of sergeant major. Leaves Army.

    After serving in the Army for a couple years, and doing well, Poe is honorably discharged. Still trying to pursue his goal of being a writer, Poe continues to try and get his name out there.
  • Deliberately gets kicked out of West Point.

  • Poe moves in with another aunt and his cousin.

  • Poe submits a number of stories to magazines.

    Trying to get his name out there as a writer, Poe tries to get some of his literary work publicized by local magazines, but is rejected as he is a beginning writer.
  • Marries his 13 year old cousin, Virginia.

  • Writes "The Fall of the House of Usher"

  • "Pit And The Pendulum" and "Masque of Red Death" published

  • Poe wins a hundred dollar prize for "The Gold Bug"

  • The Raven is written

  • Poes wife, Virginia, dies.

    After this point in time, Poe becomes very depressed. He soon begins to drink excessively in regards to his grievances.
